ILA Forest EDUCATION Van
EDUCATORS INFORMATION
Dubbed as one of the Interior's most exciting initiatives ever in forest education, the ILA Forest Education Van has been retrofitted with educational tools and embellished with painted murals that tell many stories about BC's Forests.
EDUCATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Former teachers, Jeannie Steele and Debbie Sluggett (now educational liaisons to forest companies) with assistance from Canadian Women in Timber members, Ann Polson and Betty Ann McDonald, designed the van as an educational tool to help teach students and the public about the many diverse aspects of forestry.
Trained educators and industry representatives deliver three 15 minute presentations covering:
The story of forestry in BC- both past and present day
Forest health- including fire, defoliators, bark beetles, Mountain Pine Beetle and natural disturbances
Users of the forest & management of a sustainable, renewable resource
Presentations utilize a variety of aids including tree samples, pictures, a bug display box, wildlife tree, wood product samples and forest murals depicting human and nature's use of the forest
The Forestry Education Van was designed as a teaching resource at many levels. It complements two teaching resources created by Debbie and Jeannie that learning objectives in the grade 3 and 5 Social Studies and Science curriculum - Community Development -The History of Logging (Grade 3) and Our Living Resource - The Forest (Grade 5).
